The Maine Winter Sports Center Junior program provides young adults with the tools to be both successful as athletes and in life outside of sport. Athletes in this year-round program learn the importance of commitment, discipline and responsibility for their personal success and as role models for youth and other members of their communities.

July 10, 2010
June and July have been busy months in Aroostook County. We have seen some of the hottest weather that we can expect to see, been rained on and kept training through it all.
To start things off Middle School athletes from throughout the “County” as well as Western Maine (Farmington area) came together in Fort Kent for two days of hard work for the Middle School Racer Camp of 2010 on June 26th and 27th. In two days people were getting to know each other, playing games, working on strength, agility, roller skiing and shooting. The University of Maine at Fort Kent came through with housing and some fantastic food for all campers and staff, which kept everyone, going hard.
The week following the Middle School Racer Camp the Junior programs joined up with the Biathlon, XC, and Community programs to conquer Katahdin in Baxter State Park. On June 29th MWSC staff and athletes made the trek down to the Penobscot River to camp out the night before hiking the mountain. That night was filled with camp set up, swimming and roasting of the world’s largest marshmallows (these giant marshmallows were a new site for me). Somewhere in between all of these activities insert a thunderstorm that let an apocalyptic amount of water fall from the sky in a 15-30 min period of time. Thanks to the hard work of all campers getting camp set up ahead of time everyone had a dry place to wait out the storm before coming out to sit around a campfire.
The following morning everyone woke up early and struck off on one of two hikes that were being done on June 30th. Older athletes made a 14 mile trek over the mountain starting from Abol Crossing along the Penobscot River south of Baxter State Park and finishing at Roaring Brook, while some hiked a loop from Roaring Brook up Cathedral and back down the Saddle trail.
Maine Team Camp; July 6th-11th High School athletes from across Maine came once again to Fort Kent to take part in a 6 day intensive training camp. Athletes worked with a number of coaches to identify their strengths and areas for development. Training varied from technique roller ski session, to strength and shooting tests, a speedball tournament, and time trials. Keep your eyes open for test and time trial results so that you can see where you stack up against some of the top junior racers from the state of Maine.
And We’re Back
6/6/2010
With the arrival of June we are back at it, almost all of our teams are back together and enjoying each others company, working hard, and having fun. As I sit and look at the rest of the month there are some important dates to keep in mind for the Junior Racing Programs. June 19th, the first day of Summer scheduling for the Development Team and when to hand in all Team Contracts and Financial Aide Forms (Development Team and Regional Team), June 26th, Middle School Racer Camp in Fort Kent (if you have received an invitation to this camp make sure you have contacted Seth Hubbard at seth@mainewsc.org), June 30th, The Katahdin Hike in Baxter State Park and deadline for summer tuition.
We have a very busy summer planed with many great opportunities for people of all ages from regular practices, biathlon practices, and other events across Aroostook ranging from orienteering, mountain biking, roller skiing, hiking, and much more. I hope to see many more smiling faces in the months to come.
